INTER-MISSION INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION-AN OVERVIEW
Inter-Mission Industrial Development Association is a charitable Social Service Organization in existence from 1974 with the mission to provide “value-based holistic education, training and rehabilitation to orphans, poor youth, poor women, the unemployed and the underprivileged” and enable them to become respectable citizens of the society.
IID was running Industrial Schools and Orphanages, right from its inception. The Inter-Mission Micro Enterprise Development (IMED) Program was started in the year 1996 to help poor women in the sub-urbs of Chennai by providing micro-credits to start their own business activity and by programs that help them save money. As the IMED work expanded, the women who were being helped brought to light the problems faced by their children in enjoying continued higher education due to various factors, both financial and non-financial.
Sensing the need, IID decided to set up Community Colleges for young people, particularly girls, also for the handicapped such as the visually challenged, hearing impaired etc. To help them learn skills, to find jobs, and to show them that they too could earn money and help support their family, on 1st July 2002, the first Community College was started for girls at Vadapalani, in the centre of Chennai city. Other Community Colleges followed in the parts of Chennai such as Kellys, Aminjikarai and Kottivakkam, both for boys and girls.
IID runs an Industrial Training School, seven Community Colleges and few Day Care Centers and Homes. IIDA has produced more than 1700 Diploma holders, all of whom have been placed in various companies and major organizations as well.
With the noble idea of expanding the concept of Community College, IID has joined hands with similar mission organizations in various parts of the country and has encouraged them to start Community Colleges in their respective areas of operations according to the needs of the people. So far three Franchisee Community Colleges have been established and more are in the pipeline for the current and ensuing academic year.
IID aims to establish hundreds of Community Colleges across the country, utilizing its own resources and those of other like-minded organization. It also envisages establishment of Community Colleges outside the country and serve many youngsters in need.
